Summer Accelerated Math Camp
Apply Now for Summer Accelerated Math Camp! »
Introduction: Summer Accelerated Math Camp or SAM-C is a month long summer study program of accelerated math and science study sponsored by the Urban Education Institute at the University of Chicago.
Area of Study: Students will use mathematics, logic, biology, and the life sciences to deepen their technical knowledge and interest in these subjects.
How the SAM-C Works: Our program combines classroom instruction, group work, and field research (with visits to the Indiana Dunes and the Warren Woods in Michigan). The mathematics component will be classroom based, with an emphasis on using logic puzzles and games to explore mathematical understanding. Students will receive training in both how to collaborate in a group to solve problems, as well as how to use advanced technology (particularly the TI Nspire with CAS graphing calculator) in mathematical investigation. In Biology, students will take what they learn in the classroom and apply it to investigations in the field, collecting and analyzing data using the Vernier Labpro and other scientific equipment. Students may earn class credit for SAM-C participation.*
For Students
SAM-C will be held from 6/27/2011 to 7/22/2011. Students are expected to attend class from 8:30 to 12:30pm daily. Students are responsible for their transportation to and from SAM-C. Applications must be submitted by 4/11/2011.
Note that this summer there will be two groups in SAM-C, determined by which math and science courses students have taken previously; in this way we can accommodate both students who have had biology or chemistry and those who have not .
For Teachers
Students from your school may request that you submit an online letter of recommendation for them. In most cases our system will send you an automatic email. Please submit recommendations by 4/11/2011.
For Counselors
By logging into the USI network web hub you will be able to track which students from your school have applied to SAM-C and stay abreast of the status of their applications.
It is important that the USI Network staff receive accurate and complete information in a timely manner in order to aid the application process. Please send the most recent student transcript available for the applicant by 4/11/2011.
There are two methods for submitting transcripts.
By mail – Mail transcripts to:
