Science And Math Camp

Apply Now for the Science And Math Camp! »

Introduction: The UEI’s Science and Math Camp or SAMC is a month long summer study program of accelerated math and science study sponsored by the Urban Education Institute at the University of Chicago.

Area of Study: Students will use mathematics, logic, biology, and the life sciences to deepen their technical knowledge and interest in these subjects.

How the SAMC Works: Our program combines classroom instruction, group work, and field research (with visits to Jackson Park and the Indiana Dunes). The mathematics component is classroom based, with an emphasis on using logic puzzles and games to explore mathematical understanding.  Students will receive training in both how to collaborate in a group to solve problems, as well as how to use advanced technology (particularly the TI Nspire with CAS graphing calculator) in mathematical investigation. In Biology, students will take what they learn in the classroom and apply it to investigations in the field, collecting and analyzing data using the Vernier Labpro and other scientific equipment. Students may earn class credit for SAMC participation (at their home school’s discretion).

For Students
SAMC 2012 will be held from June 25th to July 20th. Students are expected to attend class from 8:30 to 12:15pm daily.  Students are responsible for their transportation to and from SAMC. Applications must be submitted by April 30th, 2012.

To be eligible for SAMC, students must be entering 8th to 12th grade or their freshmen year of college. SAMC consists of two programs: SAMC1 for younger students, and SAMC2 for those high school students that have attended the camp previously and have completed high school courses like biology, chemistry, and/or Algebra 1. Also, to be eligible students must attend a former USI network school, or a school that is a partner of the Urban Teacher Education Program at the University of Chicago (Chicago UTEP).

For Teachers
Students from your school may request that you submit an online letter of recommendation for them. In most cases our system will send you an automatic email. Please submit recommendations by April 30th.

For Counselors
It is important that SAMC staff receive accurate and complete information in a timely manner in order to aid the application process. Please send the most recent student transcript available for the applicant by April 30th.

There are three methods for submitting transcripts:

By mail – Mail transcripts to:
Urban Education Institute Attn: Douglas O’Roark 1313 E. 60th St. Chicago, IL 60637

By fax – Fax transcripts to:
