Summer Learning
In the USI Network, learning does not end when the final school bell rings ushering in the beginning of summer. Summers provide a unique opportunity for students, teachers and administrators to engage in sustained, planned learning around their specific interests and needs.
Students
USI Network students (and campuses affiliated with USI network schools) are invited to participate in a four-week mathematics and economics immersion camp known as Summer Accelerated Math Camp (SAM-C). SAM-C students participate in half-day classes organized around mathematics and economics projects, problems, and inquiry.
Beginning in the summer of 2010 USI Network students will be invited to participate in a similar two-week camp focused on increasing the writing skills of Network students.
Teachers
Summers also represent an opportunity for teachers to engage in sustained professional development. For two weeks, English Language Arts (ELA) teachers come together to study an important concept for teaching in the ELA classroom as well as plan units of instruction.
Beginning in the summer of 2010, USI Network math teachers will be invited to SAM-C to participate in lesson study and analysis that will continue throughout the school year.
