USI Network Schools

Karen Skalitzky

Karen Skalitzky (KMS Educational Consulting) is a leadership coach for the USI network. She supports school leaders and instructional leadership teams (ILTs) as they facilitate and lead collective action towards improving student learning. As a coach, she invites school leaders and ILT members to deepen their own learning and create professional learning communities that work to ensure and provide rigorous instruction and equitable opportunities for all students.

In addition, Karen has extensive experience working with the STEP literacy assessment in both under-performing and high-achieving public schools in Chicago, the Crete-Monee school district, and charter schools in California and New York. As a Reading Specialist and educator for eighteen years, she has had the privilege of using STEP to fuel instructional change within individual classrooms, across grade levels, throughout schools, and across an entire district.

Prior to consulting with the USI network, Karen coached individual and teams of teachers as well as trained Reading Specialists to be coaches. She helped to open Alain Locke Charter Academy in 1999 and served on their leadership team. She holds a Master of Arts degree from The University of Michigan and was a Teacher Supervisor in University of Michigan’s Peace Corps Fellows Program. She enjoys speaking publicly on issues of education and is the author of one book and several published essays.
