Julie Stewart

Julie Stewart is the Director of English Language Arts Development, working with middle and high schools in the Urban Education Institute Portfolio. She currently facilitates the English Language Arts-Humanities Learning Community as well as the Coaching Learning Group.

Julie is a former high school English and humanities teacher and an educational researcher with extensive experience evaluating teacher inquiry groups in Massachusetts, Texas, Kentucky, and California. She holds a B.A. and M.A. in English and has done postgraduate work in English at the University of Texas at Austin. She also holds a masters and doctorate in teaching and learning from Harvard University, where she was editor of the Harvard Educational Review and co-editor of a book on qualitative research methods. Prior to joining UEI, Stewart was assistant professor of education in curriculum and instruction at Loyola University who conducted several studies in Chicago area schools. Her research interests are curriculum history and the forms and functions of talk in schools.
